When is the right time to hire a designer?

November 12, 2024

When it comes to a renovation or remodel, often a designer is called in after the core renovation is done. That’s when the space is ready for decoration right? Sorry… but waiting until the renovation work is done, is much TOO LATE. Don’t get me wrong, if you are simply refreshing or updating an existing space, then a design professional can work wonders in transforming it into the space of your dreams. But if you are undertaking a renovation or more substantial remodel that involves construction, you can be leaving a lot on the table by waiting to call in the design team until after the construction is complete.

I understand it can be daunting looking at the numbers and usually the feeling is to manage one aspect of a big project at a time. A natural inclination is to think of the project the way the on-site work occurs: demolition > construction > finishing > décor. But this is true only in terms of the work that occurs at the project site. The décor and design work you witness at the project site is the result of a lot of research, decisions and off-site work that typically happens well before the demolition and construction has started. By delaying hiring your design team until after the space has been renovated or built, you have already committed to a number of critical design decisions, not the least of which is your space plan.

We have lovely clients who were about to embark on a remodel. Thankfully they called us first because we ended up reversing their main floor, opening up walls and closing others. If they hadn’t engaged us they would have just updated finishes and kept a floor plan that absolutely did not suit their lifestyle or objectives. Furthermore, the timeless selections we specified means their investment will look great and function well for years to come.

There are also more practical matters to consider. A space plan and furniture plan need to happen first (see our September blog here) in order to ensure that the electrical and lighting layout works with the space and furniture layouts.

Consider how you want to feel in your completed space. This feeling directly affects the finish choices for the space. Magazine worthy rooms that people swoon over involve a design team from the outset. What is the point of having fresh new finishes for a space if you don’t end up with the overall design and décor to actually make it feel great to live in? A design professional will ensure that the finished results (space plan, colour, furnishings, lighting, window coverings, millwork (built-in cabinetry), artwork, accessories, etc.) are consistent with the architecture of your home, the style you want and the feeling you desire. They can also guide you to more environmentally sensitive choices that will improve your overall air quality and lower your carbon footprint.

I LOVE decorating and design. However, I love both more when I’m able to weigh in from the beginning of a big project to ensure a cohesive and fabulous result for my clients.
