Downsizing in Style: Creating a Chic, Functional Home Without Sacrificing Comfort
Dec 11, 2024
Once the kids have moved out, many empty nesters find themselves living in and maintaining a large home when really they’d prefer a smaller place. They might be travelling more or simply have rooms that aren’t used very often now that children aren’t around as much. Downsizing makes intuitive sense… but how will they make the smaller place still feel luxurious and comfortable?
First of all, downsizing doesn’t necessarily mean moving to a tiny house. It could be that you’re currently in a 6,000 square foot home and considering moving to a 2,500 square foot home. The ideal size of your downsize is important and very personal.
Start by taking an inventory of what you currently own (and want to keep). Are there any special or heirloom pieces that are dear to you that will be incorporated into the new space? More than anything, your new home still needs to feel like you and reflect your personality.
As well as an inventory of things, take some time to reflect on the feeling you want in your new space as well as the way you need it to function in this stage of life. Will you have regular overnight guests, or is it more likely that you will just entertain friends and family for meals?
The key to downsizing and maintaining a stylish, luxurious and comfortable home, is using bespoke pieces that suit your lifestyle and are flexible. The most luxurious spaces usually have custom made furnishings where every element has been chosen specifically for that client. This means not only will it look great, it will function and fit perfectly. This is not about more space, but rather the right pieces that function optimally in the space you have.
This is also the time to splurge on aesthetic design layers that you may have avoided when the kids were younger. Embrace that special wallpaper for your bedroom. Make sure that area rug is large enough and feels great underfoot. Commit to the full wall of custom layered drapery panels. Hang wall sconces, picture lights and ceiling lights that will work together create the glow you’re after. Don’t skimp on the layers of design. That is where the magic happens.
A carefully considered and thoughtful plan can allow you to live in a luxurious way, no matter the size of your home.
