Mixing Metals

February 15, 2023

One way to inject timelessness into a space is to mix the metals. I am often asked by clients if a particular metal finish is ‘in fashion’. A good example of this is warm burnished brass which is popular now. Though it happens to be popular today, it is a metal finish that has been around forever, centuries in fact!

At our firm, we don’t fall in line with every new trend. Each project should not only reflect the people who live in it but also should have longevity. As such, we typically mix metals in our designs. Things don’t need to match; they just need to make sense with one another.

Here is a good example of a project we recently completed that previously had only chrome finishes throughout the entire space. The singular chrome finish dated the space and gave it a more serious feeling than the clients wanted. By mixing in black metal, warm burnished brass, pewter and stainless, we were able to dial down the formality while injecting a sense of timelessness and interest.

As a starting point, a bit of black is always welcome. An easy way to inject black is with metal. It may be in the form of lighting, cabinet hardware or even furniture, as long as the style of the items is complementary. So, perhaps don’t combine sleek modern lighting with French provincial furnishings!

The point is, there’s no need for rigid matching when it comes to metal surfaces in a space. Choose complementary items in different finishes and you won’t be disappointed in a few years time with a singular focus on the ‘wrong’ finish.
