How Colour Can Be Timeless
July 12, 2023
Are you afraid to inject colour into your space for fear it may date quickly? I would actually argue the opposite may be true.
If your home is designed well in its entirety, with harmony between all the spaces, you can most certainly inject some colour, any colour, for a long time. The trick, however, is to make sure that the palette you choose is one you love and also that the tones of the various hard elements, like flooring and cabinetry work well within that scheme.
This project was completed more than six years ago but still holds together beautifully. Each element was specifically chosen to work together with the others. All of the furnishings are custom made. The painting, by Maya Eventov, is the star of the show that works beautifully with all the other elements.
Try not to be caught in what is trending at the moment. Think instead about what works for you personally. For example, do you love summer and being on the water? Maybe a more coastal palette would work better for you.
Alternatively, is fall your favourite season? Perhaps an earthier palette will be more comfortable in that case.
No matter your colour preference, what makes a room sing are the various textures, patterns and natural surfaces that work together. If everything in a room is a single colour like gray, for example, without the relief of a warm wood or metal, a textural pattern, or interesting art and lighting, then the room will feel flat and lifeless. Instead, a great design combines the various qualities of the many elements in the space to create interest and harmony at the same time.
So it isn’t about the specific colour palette you choose. It is about the harmony that results from a carefully considered cast of characters that will bring your home to life.
