What to do with extra rooms, now that the kids have moved out

If your kids have moved out, you might find yourself with some extra rooms or space. Some people at this stage wonder if they should consider moving and downsizing. But consider the expense of moving (not to mention the hassle). If you already like your house, there is a better approach: redesign your space to better function for your current needs. This is true at any stage, but particularly when you have whole rooms or areas in your house that are under-utilized.

Before we get ahead of ourselves dreaming of all the new uses for the extra space, let’s remember to make sure we still have guest/sleeping quarters for our family. It’s not like the kids are never coming back! With that in mind, we can re-purpose the extra space in a way that also serves our day-to-day lives.

An obvious choice for many is to reclaim space for a more luxurious home office. Flexibility in our work location in recent years means a comfortable home office isn’t a luxury but a necessity. But, it can also do double duty as a guest suite.

Other, more single-purpose uses may be a dressing room, wine cellar, craft room, art studio, home gym, library, and the list goes on.
