What Is My Design Style?

May 13, 2024

If you’re like most people who appreciate good interior design, you may wonder: What is my design style? Perhaps your tastes have evolved since you first decorated your home and you are trying pin down what it is you need now before you invest in a décor update. Whether it’s a renovation or redesign of your interior space, a label can provide clarity, right?

My answer may not be quite what you expect. When thinking about your space and your needs, start with its function. What are all the activities you are going to enjoy doing in this space? Is it a single purpose room, or maybe it needs to do double or triple duty?

Once you’ve settled on the function, it’s time to focus on the style (or for me… the fun bit!). The architecture of your home can and should provide some guidance as to the direction you’ll go. Next, rather than landing on a specific label to define your style, concentrate on the mood you want to create. Do you want to feel energized in your home office? Maybe you want calm and serenity in your principal bedroom retreat? See where I’m headed?

In your travels, think about the places and/or hotels you loved the most. What feeling did they evoke for you? Regardless of whether they were traditional villas, modern resorts, rustic cabins, boutique hotels… consider how you felt in those spaces. If you took photos, go through them and notice how the elements in their design and style worked together. Typically, the best designs have many layers that work together to create a seamless style and response from its visitors.

Another source of guidance could be your closet. If you wear mainly neutrals, black and white, then chances are a neutral palette in your decor will resonate with you. If you adore colour and wear a lot of it, then injecting colour into your décor is probably a good idea.

All of these factors play a role in determining your design style. By thinking through all of these elements, you can narrow down what moves you. So while this exercise may not give you a specific design label, it is guiding you along a path to reach your desired outcome.
