The Power of Decor

October 20, 2022

The power of decor is often underestimated. Whether it is a small update or a complete renovation, unless you plan out and execute the decor portion of the project, your room or home will not give you the feeling you desire. Of course, if what you desire is an empty space then that’s a different blog topic!

Area rugs, sumptuous custom furnishings, great lighting, ‘stop you in your tracks’ stunning original artwork, gorgeous custom drapery, and special finishing accessories will all bring your room to life and make it uniquely yours. Practically speaking, many of those layers also offer function. Ever notice the echo of an empty room? You need all the soft furnishings and decor to absorb the sound and offer warmth.

Of course, you often need to address the bones of a space first before completing the decor. However, planning both at the same time, from the beginning of your project, is critical to ensuring a wise spend and an awesome result. The last thing you want is to have to pour more money and effort into fixing a space that wasn’t cohesively designed from the beginning. Spend once and spend wisely is what I tell my clients.

For this reason, I always recommend hiring a designer at the beginning of your project. You need to first work out your space plan, furniture plan and lighting plan to know where you need electrical and plumbing. Also, planning the decor early means your big selections like flooring and cabinetry are made with the whole space (including adjacent spaces) in mind. This is the key to a harmonious home.

Look, I get it, renovations are costly. It seems like decor should be something to think about later, once the renovation is done. However, I urge you to focus on the final result with all the decor complete and in place. Engage a designer for a complete design plan at the beginning of your project, or at least some early guidance. It will help define the scope of your renovation and ensure an amazing final result.
