The Art of Customizing Your Home: Personalize Your Living Spaces

July 10, 2024

I have a pet peeve. Given what I do, you can probably guess that it relates to interior décor and design. My pet peeve is people creating spaces that look just like other people’s spaces. In other words, cookie cutter spaces that lack personality.

I understand if there’s a certain aesthetic that you’re drawn to. Or perhaps you take inspiration from a particular aesthetic. However, your home isn’t yours until you’ve personalized it. Often people worry that if they hire an interior design professional, that they will not have a space that reflects them in the end. I would argue the opposite is true, for our firm at least.

Up front we spend a lot of time getting to know our client, their family, their tastes, their way of life, preferred activities, preferred seasons, travel destinations they love, and the list goes on and on. Only by delving deeply into what makes them tick, can the design for their space reflect them and their family.

Here are some examples of things to consider in personalizing your space.

Art

We feel pretty strongly about great art, preferably original. Art gives your room a soul and if chosen well, moves you every time you enter the room.

Colour

Rather than focus on what’s trending, it’s important to incorporate the colours you’re drawn to. This will make your home timeless. To ensure a harmonious environment, a colour palette for the whole home is key.

Fabrics

Maybe linen and hemp are popular but what if autumn is your favourite season and you love all things cozy? In that case, nubbly woven fabrics, cut velvets and mohair may be more your thing.

Activities

If you never watch tv but love to read, comfy seating with a great reading light are important. Or, maybe you love to entertain so focusing on an inviting dining area that encourages conversation is paramount.

I’ve simplified the examples, but you get my point. When you walk into your home, there should be no doubt that it’s yours. That’s when you’re going to experience the wonderful emotions of peace and safety, and breathe a sigh of joy each time you return home.

If you want to experience the joy of walking into a fully completed space that is uniquely and completely yours, reach out. We’d love to help.
