Creating Harmony in Your Home: Cohesive Interior Design

August 14, 2024

When remodelling or decorating, often people decide to tackle one, maybe two or even three rooms of their home. When doing so, they tend to think of these rooms in isolation from the rest of their home. This is a mistake. Okay, let’s be clear. This isn’t life or death. However, I guarantee that updating a couple of rooms in isolation, without considering what’s happening in the rest of your home, will mean the untouched rooms will either look terrible or like they belong in another house.

Creating a Cohesive Interior Design for your Home

To create harmony in your home, you must consider the design of the whole home. This is not to say you cannot tackle things in phases if you choose. However, knowing your plan for the entire home allows you to create spaces that connect and speak to one another.

Here are some ways to create harmony in your home:

  1. Make sure there is a common colour thread throughout the home. Perhaps all of your trim is the same colour.

  2. Be consistent in the style of furnishings and millwork from room to room, whether it's transitional, modern or something else.

  3. With the exception of bathrooms and possibly the front entry or mudroom, try to keep the flooring consistent throughout your home. The fewer changes the better.

  4. Ensure all of your lighting is the same colour temperature. We tend to use 2700K or 3000K depending on the feeling we’re after.

  5. Finally consider the overall colour palette of the home, and ensure that all of the colours work together.

To me a sign of a beautifully harmonious home, is that if you felt like it, you could move furniture and art from one room to another and still have everything work well together. Side bonus: if you’re not in your forever home, this makes a future move much easier as you can shift items around in your new space as needed.

When you finally achieve harmony in your home, you’ll know it. Coming home will feel like a hug.
