More Space Doesn’t Equal Great Design

January 12, 2024

If you live in an urban centre, I suspect that at some point you’ve dreamt about having more space. Perhaps you think that if only you could increase your square footage, then your home would work for you - I disagree!

It’s natural to have an urge for a little more breathing room. But I would argue that good design and decor in a small footprint is better than trying to simply add more space.

The difference between a builder home and a home designed by a design professional is that the latter makes use of every inch in a way that serves a specific homeowner versus adding space for the sake of increased square footage (or to appeal to a broader range of buyers).

As part of re-imagining this modest urban semi-detached home, we not only opened up the kitchen and dining room to each other, but we also flipped the two spaces as well. Reducing the size of the kitchen window at the same time, allowed us to place the sink under it for a beautiful view of the yard. This completely transformed the main level which now serves as the entertaining hub for this family.

Part of our philosophy at Yassein Interiors Inc. is to plan carefully, buy fewer things that are high quality, and keep those things for a long time. All of this contributes to a more sustainable approach to design and a more comfortable way to live.

A recent condo project is another good example. While the space is tight, careful planning allowed for enough entertaining space for 8 people, a home office area and full height pantry storage for the kitchen. The base of the built in banquette provides additional storage for both pots and pans as well as other items.

The urge to buy or add more square footage should be replaced by an investment in good design and decor. Why own a large space that hasn’t been decorated for your comfort and enjoyment? Over the long term, you will have better function and style in a smaller, well-designed space while minimizing the upkeep and running costs of your home. If you love your community and neighbours, why not invest in your existing home instead?
