How to Make a Room Feel Warmer

February 13, 2024

If you updated your interior in the last few years with a monochromatic neutral interior, you may find yourself asking how to make a room feel warmer. At this bleak time of year, many of us crave a little more warmth or colour. Of course, as I write this, the sun has finally peeked out after many gloomy days in a row! Nonetheless, your well-designed neutral palette can take on all sorts of personalities, depending on the particular colour injection you’re craving.

How to make a grey room feel warmer

If your palette is in the grey world, a step in a warmer direction would be some earthy browns, chartreuse, camels, and rusts. Probably the easiest way to introduce these colours would be in the form of cushion covers or throws. Remember not to overdo it; a little goes a long way.

How to make a taupe room feel warmer

If your neutral palette is in the taupe or brown world, you can add in some blush, shades of blue, or even jewel tones. Varying the patterns and textures will always provide additional interest.

Art is another terrific way to amp up the colour and lift your mood. Check out your local art galleries for some inspiration. By the way, your art doesn’t need to live in the same room forever either. You can certainly move pieces around to enjoy in different rooms of your home.

If you have an occasional chair or two that are in need of a lift, the fabric inspiration is endless when re-upholstering. An injection of colour on your chairs can really brighten and personalize your space. In this recent project, pops of colour in the toss cushions and swivel chairs liven up the neutral shell. The beautiful original art above the stairway really sings against the neutral grasscloth backdrop.

Of course, depending on how far you’d like to go, you can always consider a change of paint or wallpaper, either on the walls or the ceiling. The beauty of starting with a neutral palette (assuming it was done well), is that modifications to suit your mood are possible without a complete remodel. Or, of course, if it’s time to redecorate, it’s time to redecorate, and you know who to call. 😀

Even if you’re breaking up your winter with travel, sometimes you still need a little lift at home to see you through to spring!
