Elevate Your Laundry Room
April 14, 2023
National laundry day is April 15 so I thought it fitting to talk about ways to elevate your laundry room.
Believe it or not, laundry is at the top of my list as the most satisfying chore. It has a clear beginning and end, with the added bonus of restocking your closet with all your favourite things - clean!
Seriously, this is a room that is often overlooked, despite the numerous hours we spend in it. It is difficult to enjoy doing the laundry if your laundry room doesn’t function well. The first and most important thing is to have a great set of appliances. Your washer and dryer should do all the things that you need them to do. In my case, I love my side-by-side, front-loading Samsung laundry pair. Having them side-by-side allows us to have a beautiful quartz countertop on which to fold clean laundry. A luxury addition to your laundry room could be a steam closet appliance. If you have the space, a steam closet can extend the life of your clothing by reducing the frequency of washing while also reducing your reliance on dry cleaning.
In addition to appliances, another non-negotiable is some form of drying rack. This, like a steam closet, will extend the life of your clothing while reducing your energy consumption. The type of drying rack/rod you install will depend on your room layout as well as the type of laundry you are drying.
While I am always an advocate of harmony in your overall home design, this is a space where you can try out something fun - perhaps an interesting backsplash tile, accent colour or fun hardware. Oh, and don’t forget a large sink with a gorgeous faucet.
Clearing the clutter and having a home for everything behind closed doors will also go a long way to creating a welcoming and calm environment. Continuing the thread of having a place for everything, how about a laundry chute from your bedroom that deposits your laundry into a closet in your laundry room. A small design detail like this can make a big impact in day-to-day functionality.
Finally, remember that you can incorporate other functions into this space. Perhaps together with a laundry room, you want a craft space, a mudroom, food storage pantry or a small work space? Ultimately, your real estate is precious. Make it work for you and your lifestyle, but make it pretty too!
