Great Design Increases the Value of Your Home

October 11, 2023

Some people consider hiring a designer a luxury. My clients view it as an investment, not only in their well-being, but also in one of their most substantial assets - their home.

They view it as an investment in themselves and the other people in their home. They want a place that has been designed just for them, to reflect their unique personality and lifestyle. They want to walk in after a great vacation, and breathe a sigh of relief and pleasure at returning home. That is the investment in their well-being.

At the same time, professional design can be a good financial investment by making your home feel elevated and appropriately finished. And by design, I don’t just mean the shell. I am also talking about the furnishings and quality selections that create a harmonious and peaceful environment that functions impeccably. By enhancing the positive aspects of a space (and minimizing its negatives), a great design makes it easier for a potential buyer to see themselves living in and enjoy the space.

Of course, preventing poor spends and minimizing mistakes along the design journey is another obvious financial benefit to a professionally designed home.

We completed a project in late 2020, that we designed for a retired couple who were renovating the space for themselves. The design brief focused on increasing function through adding a main floor laundry, storage closet and a kitchen layout that prioritized openness and light as well as abundant prep space.

The pandemic created a wrinkle in our client’s plans to move back to this home from the U.S. While they were never able to live in their newly renovated space, they were able to completely recoup their design investment and more when they had to sell after the renovation was finished. A great design meant they were able to attract buyers who appreciated the thoughtful renovation.

A while back, we completed another project where our clients were able to enjoy the results of their design for a few years before they decided to move to a different city. Because we made careful, classic choices that stood the test of time, it allowed them to sell at the one of the highest levels in their area. An additional benefit was that most of their furnishings were reused in their new home in different spaces. That return on investment is another benefit of great design.

So, yes, it costs real money to hire a designer, renovate, and redecorate. However, it is also a great investment when done well. It will have a lasting impact both financially and in terms of your well-being.
